FAQs for Original Mini 14 (pre-580 series) Mount

(Scroll down for New RUGER® Mini-14/6.8/30 Series 580 and higher.)

A: If the prefix or first three digits of the serial number are lower than 580, you need an Original style mount. If 580 or higher, you need the New Model. But there are a few exceptions.  See the photos in the “Barrel ID” tab to identify the  model that will fit your Mini. Examples: 180, 182, 184 etc, you will need the Original style mount.

A: YES. You should see an average group size reduction with any type of ammunition used.

The design of the barrel clamp for the Mini-14 model of our Mini-Scout-Mount is based on the Weaver style scope ring with a V-block.

The clamp has a hook on one side that fits into a recess in the mount body.  When the two screws on the flange side of the clamp are tightened, it cinches the barrel down with tremendous force and secures it from movement, just like a Weaver scope ring works.

There is a V-block machined into the underside of the mount body where the barrel rests.  This V-block centers the mount body directly over the center of the rifle barrel.  When the barrel clamp is secured, the rifle barrel cannot move out of this V-block.

Securing this barrel clamp and V-block assembly serves to stiffen the entier rifle barrel, resulting in greatly improved accuracy for most Mini-14's.

A: Usually not because they came standard with the sling swivel mounted on the side of the lower gas block assembly (see the Barrel ID tab for a picture). If you replace this part with the standard lower gas block assembly, our mount will fit.

A: Yes, but some stocks may have to be slightly trimmed in the fore end to fit the mount correctly.

A: Probably not as most of them came with the side-mounted sling swivel (see the photos under the Barrel ID tab).  The AC-556K will definitely NOT fit.

A: YES…but only in the area of the gas block assembly.

A: YES.

A: ONLY if you are still using the factory lower gas block assembly. If you have a different gas block, it will not fit.

A: YES. Our mount does not interfere with the use of a regular scope mounted in the traditional position over the receiver. You may have to go to higher rings for your scope to clear our mount.

A: Contact our Customer Service and we will coach you through some steps to fix that.

A: Ruger® has suggested torqueing to 21 Inch Pounds, NOT FOOT POUNDS.  Using the hex key provided and snugging down the gas block screws without over-tightening will give all of the torque needed for the installation.

A: Not really. Minor contact here will not impair the function or accuracy of the rifle and in most cases, this happens only when the action rod is pulled to the rear by hand.  If the contact impedes the function of the rifle when firing, call our office and we can coach you on how to correct the problem.

A: YES.  You will need to order the Original Mini-30 model (non-flanged barrel).

A: Original Mini-14 (black) 7.0 oz, 9.975 in long
Original Mini-30 8.0 oz, 9.975 in long
Mini III (New Mini-14/6.8/30/300 AAC 6.9 oz, 9.925 long

A: That should be a new 580 series which takes the Mini-Scout-Mount III.

A: The Mini-Scout-Mount for the ORIGINAL Mini-14 is the correct model for the 180 series rifles and will fit all variants except those with a Ruger side-folding stock and side mounted sling swivel, or the AC556K.

A: All models of Mini-Scout-Mount for Ruger Mini’s attach the same way.  They replace the hand guard and the top half of the gas block assembly.  The mount body attached to the lower half of the gas block assembly, and a clamp secured the mount to the barrel.  See the installation instructions for more detail.
